From a Poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson

For Soprano and Piano

The water understands
Civilization well;
It wets my foot, but prettily,
It chills my life, but wittily,
It is not disconcerted,
It is not broken-hearted:
Well used, it decketh joy,
Adorneth, doubleth joy:
Ill used, it will destroy,
In perfect time and measure
With a face of golden pleasure
Elegantly destroy.

Composed under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Kellogg at the University of Colorado.  The piano part's motivic figures impressionistically represent flexibly-bonded water molecules which accumulate to form waves.  The soprano part's melodic line mimics water's undulating surface as its words express a deep truth.
