String instruments have been used since earlier than five thousand years ago, originally with parts made of perishable materials, having arisen through invention on several occasions of a society already rich in natural resources and cultural traditions.  Harps, lyres, guitars, banjos, mandolins, dulcimers and zithers are included as primary string instruments, but so far, only works for instruments of the violin family are offered below.  Yet they represent some of the finest work available here and reveal a remarkable development of compositional style and technique.
