Various metals have been used as percussion instruments for
thousands of years. Then during the mid-20th century, some hard-working residents of Trinidad and Tobago began experimenting
with discovered melodic possibilities offered by a hammering and shaping of then-ubiquitous 55-gallon oil barrels. One
of the more important of these early innovators was Ellie Mannette, who went on to develop an American company producing some
of the finest steel drums and also became a professor at West Virginia University. A few years ago, I had the honorable
pleasure of studying briefly with him and performing as a member of the WVU Steel Band. The composition below turned
out to be very challenging for the full group, but may be tweaked somewhat as to be suitable for an amateur band, and also
plays very well as a duet for pianos with bass pans.
