Composed in the Spring of 2006.

This piece was written for the Desert Grooves Jazz Ensemble, a six-piece group featuring Kristin Hill on flute, Jeff Quamo on clarinet, Tara Davis on euphonium, Nate Strasser on piano, Jeff Moran on double bass, and Jarvis on drums.  It crosses a rarely-traveled bridge between European classical music and American Jazz - a bridge upon which two different styles of improvisation and two different formal procedures meet.  It was composed roughly in a flexible sonata-allegro form, keeping in mind the relative bareness of Baroque and Classical scores which allow plenty of opportunity for improvisation.  Its performances were a big hit for audiences, both in the jazz club and in the concert hall, and its recording was included on the Desert Grooves LP entitled Seasons, released in 2006.  Sonata in Funk Minor is open to alternate instrumentation and further interpretation.
