Composed in 2001 as a notation-performance
experiment for a small jazz band. Each of several "head" sections are confined by II: signs :II with a direction
to "repeat with building momentum until marimbist cues to move on."
"Fanfare" was conceived in the Fall of 2001 during late-night walks from West
Virginia University's Creative Arts Center over a hill to my dormitory in the downtown campus.
"Processional" was conceived in the Fall of 1998 during long walks across
the parking lot of DJ's Thriftway while I worked as a gatherer of grocery carts, among other duties. Its melody over
a 7/4 time signature remained in mind for three years before I finally wrote it down. ....."All You Need Is Love"
by The Beatles is also in 7/4. :)
Performed in Spring,
2002, at WVU's "Live at the Falbo Jazz Showcase" by David Tyler (cl.), Joshua Musselwhite (alto sax.), ? (ten. sax.),
Nathan Underwood (bari. sax.), Jarvis (mar.), ? (bass), Zach George (congas), & Adam Osmianski (drums). LISTEN (mp3)
