Four movements for
two five-octave instruments
Composed under the guidance of Dr. John Beall at West Virginia University. One of the best-composed
and best-performed pieces available here. Features uniquely intuitive melodic tendencies and innovative polyrhythmic
patterns.
The first movement's main themes were originally composed as improvisatory intermission music for the
premier production of a ballet called Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, by Diane
Wolkstein and Marsha Knight––a deeply powerful love story from ancient Mesopotamia. The second movement
generates the cold contrast of a steady and dynamic musical clock which tests the patience of performers and audience.
The third movement is a stream-of-consciousness celebrating the joy of life, inspired by the elevating experience of the west-African
dance style known as "Gahu." The fourth movement gradually picks up speed, digs into more intricate patterns,
offers several new selections chosen from endless thematic possibilities, and finally rounds out the whole composition's circular
form.
