The term, "jazz," of unknown exact origin, signifies
general characteristics of "improvisation, syncopation, and usually a regular or forceful rhythm" (Apple Dictionary
2.1.3). The phrase, "jazz music," may prove more culturally flexible and transcendent than "improvisational
music" or "dance music," because it often combines those two attributes, and because "jazz" is just
four letters long with the uncommon two Z's. My personal iceberg of "jazz
music" remains mostly submerged, yet is just beginning to melt.
