Met her at a college party. Beautiful, smart, religious
studies major. We faced each other at the kitchen counter, quickly engaged in a heated argument about religion, science,
politics, etc., which lasted for more than an hour, during which it seemed that we were both completely oblivious to the surrounding
festivities (though I'm sure that only I was in a state of oblivion, truly). The conversation seemed so important.
Neither person "won" the debate, and none of its particular points remain as specific memories. . . . But
a general impression of two complete strangers suddenly arguing so passionately and with so much focus really stayed with
me. . . . Was invited to her birthday party the following week. Thought that it would be appropriate to bring
a small gift, and realized what a nice little song might be composed in honor of that marvelous conversation.
It
was nice to meet you. And
I'd like to spend more time arguing, yeah, with you. . . .
