Art Song
From a Poem by John Greenleaf Whittier
For Alto and Piano
|
 |
The autumn-time has come; On woods that dream of bloom, And over purpling vines, The low sun fainter shines.
The aster-flower is failing, The hazel’s gold is paling; Yet overhead more near The eternal stars appear!
Composed under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Kellogg at the University of Colorado. Based on the opening
lines of a larger poem, which may be seen in its entirety at The Poetry Foundation––a valuable resource. The piano part flourishes as to depict vigorous movement of dead leaves scattered
by autumn winds. The wide-ranging but simple and clear alto part offers a healthy perspective on the magnitude of nature
and the triumph of faith.
