From a Poem by Walt Whitman

For Improvisational Soprano and Jazz Accompaniment

Centre of equal daughters, equal sons,
All, all alike endear’d, grown, ungrown, young or old,
Strong, ample, fair, enduring, capable, rich,
Perennial with the Earth, with Freedom, Law and Love,
A grand, sane, towering, seated Mother,
Chair’d in the adamant of Time.

Composed under the guidance of Dr. Daniel Kellogg at the University of Colorado.  Soft, repetitive harmonies and a sharp, wild melody combine to express a temporarily alternative, perhaps cynical, reaction to this otherwise powerfully robust, forward-looking poem.
